yay, my brake pads are comming. BTW, should I rebuild?

wow, why are the moderators always online?

anyways, I REALLY DO HAVE A TECH QUESTION THIS TIME. ^^

ok, I'm just weird I guess...

so what in the world is a brake caliper rebuild kit? and would I need one? there's nothing wrong with my calipers, but is it a good isea to rebuild them anyways?

UNHCLL: babies are bad... babies = $$$$; me != $$$$

I finally hacked into my answering machine... and got the 2-digit reference number they wanted. So I called them back and talke to a much nicer and polite guy... turns out that they shipped one set of pads... but the other set was on hold for this reference number thing.... >.> so 1/2 of the order cleared, and the other half didn't... like, what would you do if you only got 2 of the 4 wheels you ordered... doesn't make any sense for fraud protection does it? and oops, forgot this is the tech forum... I'm bookmarked to this directly, so I wasn't paying attention.

I know we all do a lot of fixing of things that aren't broken, but this is a case where not much can be gained if there are no problems. TMS has a set of caliper pistons they claim make a difference, but I've never heard either way.

If you haven't damaged the wheel/caliper, and unless the piston leaks brake fluid, is badly rusted/ceased, piston seal broken, pad carrier doesn't move freely, little boots on guide pins broken, etc, then you would just be throwing your $ away, IMHO

Of course, upgrading to a larger brake kit (incl. larger calipers)...now thats upgrade material. If you have $ to burn, put it there vs. rebuilding OEM functional calipers.

To note about the mods - you just posted a beef about Tirerack in the tech forum. If you would have posted it in the respectful forum, and just sorta posted what happened to vent, I think everything woulda been alright.

But, nonetheless, lets just forget about that. ;)

About the rebuild kit - Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think calipers need to be rebuilt unless there is seriously something wrong with them - like they stick or something. Otherwise, its not needed. Just be sure to put some grease on the guide pins, or whatever they're called - the things the caliper moves on.

All you really need are new pads, and you should be set - but still clean off the guide pins. ;)

Goodluck man. Good to hear you got the pads shipped.

Are you sure they have pistons? I see some caliper bushings on there, but no pistons.

If you do end up rebuilding your calipers, let me know how it goes, I have to rebuild one next time I go home because it's partially seized. It'll probably be a couple of weeks though. Rebuild kits are like $17 from most any parts supplier.

Anyone know what all needs to be greased? I spent like $7 on a tube of caliper grease, and all I can think of is to put it on the guide pins. It doesn't go around the piston does it?

Whoops, right you are. Its been a while since I saw em and mistakingly remembered them as pistons. Ever heard if there was any discernible difference?

Never heard of them before until a few days ago, but on our chinsey little 1-piston calipers, I can't see how it would make a bit of difference in pedal feel. The pad may wear slightly more evenly though I guess.

is it possible to use larger calipers from any car as long as I have the right adapters to mount the calipers? or is there more to it than just caliper adapters and larger rotors...

So, should a caliper pistion become seized or very close to it, should one order a whole new caliper, or a rebuild kit?
