coding plug question 5k vs 7k

First off, apologies for another coding plug question. I've searched but there are so many different posts with conflicting info.

For later style clusters VDO/Motometer, does the coding plug differentiate m20 ETA (5k redline) vs I (7k redline) or is it irrelevant since they are both 6 cylinders?

My 87 eta cluster began acting up again so i swapped in a working 88 325i cluster (no coding plug or tach changes just a direct remove/replace). The cluster appears to be working but at 5k rpm, it seems like it wants to rev some more.

    Thanks.

Do you only swap plugs if you swap tachs? Or do I need the eta plug on my 7k 325i tach?

Pretty sure the coding plug needs to match the tach.
