    fuel or brake line?

guys, i hope i didn't waffle my self. putting the car up tonight to change the lower rad hose the jack wasn't centered on the frame rail and she slipped off. it came down and the jack pinched the metal line that runs along the OUTSIDE of the frame rail. what line is this. the car is a 87 e automatic. she runs fine at least for the 20 miles that i tested it. is this a fuel or brake line?

A single line is a fuel line. There will be 3 lines in close proximity, and those will be the brake lines.

is there more than 1 fuel line running to OR from the engine? the line looks to be totally crimped, but the car is running fine even at high speed. if it is a fuel line, can the bad section be cut out and compression fittings used to splice in a new section?

        Negative.

The SINGLE line running on the outside of the frame rail is for the fuel tank evaporative emission control system (charcoal canister).

On the INSIDE of the frame rail are three lines ... the smallest diameter one is the rear brake line, the other two are the fuel supply and fuel return lines.

will i be ok running with this line being crimped to the point where i don't think it's operational?

You could potentially have some fuel smells if the fuel tank system has an otherwise good seal and the fuel gets warm and expands. It's not an urgent repair, however, especially with winter upon us.

You might want to price up a new, pre-bent metal line from the stealer. By the time you F around with cutting, flaring and connecting what is probably a fairly rusty line it would be far easier on you.

That's definitely the vent line in your picture. The vent line fr my IX was around $16 (somewhat discounted from the BMWMiniPartsStore).

And WOW - that underside is CLEAN! That is NOT what I expected from a Jersey car.

My my lines are fairly rusty and I was going to replace them..

However, when I went to the dealer, he said the lines would not come pre bent, so I didn't order them. Can anyone confirm this? I don't want to order them unless they are pre bent

The fuel and vent lines I purchased for my IX this past summer were indeed pre-bent.

Brake lines are NOT - but I understand that they used to be. I think that's where the confusion comes from.

For an 86, it should be this one. The second part number listed for that pipe would be on a SuperEta. I would reconfirm with the dealer just to be sure.
