    Charging woes and confusion?

Hey guys! I know I'm going yo be tearing apart the car here soon, but I was just curious on if you guys had some insight on maybe what's going on?

So Today I got in the car for the first time in two days, lots of snow, and the car was absolutely dead... I jumped the car; however, it was slow to start. Didn't want to turn over; just cranked until finally it turn on. It idled funny at 500rpm for a little until he car warmed up and idled and drove fine. When I get to my destination, 15 minutes later, i turn the car off. Out of curiosity I try to turn it back on and nothing... So I got jumped and was on my way.

Now heres where it gets confusing... I;ve have these kinds of problems before; however, I fixed them... One of my two blue exciter wires for my alternator wasn;t attached, keep in mind this was months ago, so i simply crimped them together and everything was fine! My car charged at Idle, it charge in high rpm, and on the first key turn the battery light turned on! All was great! Until today..

Now all of a sudden my battery light doesn't come on but the car is charging, sometimes. When I first checked my battery at idle, after my jump, the VM read 13.5V. Then I checked the exciter wire's voltage and it read 13V, but the light still didn't come on... After turning the car on and off a couple times trying to get the light to turn on... The car starts to die again, the Battery is reading 10V and the Exciter wire is reading 0V.. But when the car goes about 3rpm the battery jumps to 14V. SO... (takes breath), I turn the car off and go inside to do a little bit of research and go back out to do the same tests to find... The Battery at idle reads 13V and the Exciter wire reads 13.5V. So now all of a sudden its charging again at idle, when 10 minutes before it wasn't. Oh and still not battery light.... The battery is BRAND new, and the alternator is less than a year old. I don't know if the Voltage regulator has been changed, I have looked at it and it doesn't look burnt or anything, but the two brushed are different sizes? I'm at a loss here? I'm assuming maybe the build went out and its causing an intermittent exciter wire to work?

Like I said it doesn't really matter because I'll be rebuilding the engine here soon, and during that Ill replace the grounds and VR and all the small shit that goes bad over the years. I was just wondering what you guys thought? If its as easy as replacing the bulb I"ll just do that because I still need the car for a week or two before the rebuild starts.

    Thanks guys!
Working...
