early 323i windshield wiper motor making noise??

Hi: When I turn the key to acc. the windshield wiper motor comes on. The wipers do not move, but the motor vibrates....it is kind of loud. Just wondering if this is normal, or something is messed up. When I unplug the harness, it of course stops....:)
    Car is a 1985 323i
    thanks for any help,

Perhaps one of the linkage pivot joints popped out?

Would that make the motor vibrate like it is on?

I now see that I didn't read your post very well. Is the motor always vibrating, then? What happens when you turn the wipers on?

          forgot to explain that part

The motor just makes more noise and the wipers do not move.:(

Wiper motor makes a vibration noise, like it wants to start when the key is turned on. If I unplug the harness the noise goes away. I can move the wiper assembly back and forth, so I don't think it is just jammed. I just can't figure out why it would be trying to work when the key is turned on. Yes, I did check the stalk to be sure it was off. I did notice that when you move the stalk up one, the motor makes more noise; and when you move it down the two clicks it does nothing different.
Was hoping there would be some way to fix this, but looks like the motor and assembly has to come out:(.
So, does anyone have a link to good pictures and instructions on how to take this out? Does the fan housings the plastic ones have to come off?
Any help would be great...sort of need wipers...

ok, here is the new information

So I went out and took things apart and did some wd40 treatment:). I can get the noise to stop if I position the wipers a little above the bottom of the window. I can get the wipers to go back down if I help them up the window. I am thinking something is bent, or the relay is bad. I think I could hear it clicking when I was helping the wiper up the window. Maybe that is normal???
              Any ideas.....

                more information

Well, I replaced the relay, no go. same problem. Seems to work great in one direction. I am thinking something is stripped inside the motor.
Anyone else ever have the same problem? Is this the common problem with the motors: works one direction not the other....
                thanks for any input,
