    bouncing temp gauge

My temp gauge jumps around on me. It has about a 1/4 of the reading as play. Like if the temp is 1/4 then it will bounce up to 1/2 and if the temp is half then it will bounce up to 3/4. It just jumps up then falls back but it does it all the time. is this a sign of the gauge failing? I have a new sending unit installed so that should be okay. any ideas?

there is a ground nut that you need to tighten on the back of the cluster, that should fix ya right up.

Do you have a pic of the nut? I took out the instrument cluster and there is only one nut on the back of the temp gauge. It is tight. Is there a nut I am missing? Any other suggestions?

maybe the temp gauge could be broken... i had the same problem a couple years ago on my m20.. replaced the gauge itself and i was good as new

On an old 318i My speedo and temp would bounce took it to a BMW mechanic's house and said there is a temp sensor located above the water pump that might be bad, oh and the speedo I guess there was a spped sensor by the flywheel that ws bad i think, but definetly could be more then one thing, or possibly a combination. There are 2 nuts. One for the fuel gauge, and one for the temp sensor. Check them both. Oftentimes the temp needle will bounce erratically if there is air in the system. Try bleeding it, and while doing that, squeeze the hoses to push out excess air.

check and tighten your engine ground as well. maybe even add another. this eliminated my gauge jumping problems.

i just dd this yeasterday and it worked....tightened up both grounding nuts.
if you pull the cluster out (follow the instructions of the Bentley) and look at the back side if it, on each side there are 2 nuts...they are the ONLY 2 7mm or 8mm copper (gold-colored) nuts on the back of the cluster. they are right in the location of where the temp gauge and the gas gauge would be located if the back of the cluster.

tighten them up snug, put a small micro sized o-ring on the end of the threaded portion so if the nut loosens up you will not loose it, or the washer that it sandwiches up against.
