what should voltage be at while idling?

I think my alternator is crapping out because my voltage is only around 13.6 should it be up around 14.0-14.4?

I think Luke means just up rev it to 1500rpm, and it'll probably go up to 14ish LOL...

use a digital volt meter (DVM) to test at the alternator, then check the battery voltage. You may be suffering from power cable loss.

And, no, I meant he should be seeing 1500 volts at idle...

            sheesh...you kids!

It should be in the high 13s. If you're hitting 14s you are overcharging, which is not a good thing either.

14.4 @1800 is typical of most charging systems. Remember, the alternator's job is to overcome the voltage at the battery...ANYTHING over the batteries' static voltage is adequate to charge. With headlights, heater, stereo, wipers, rear window defog, etc. on, you will need more.
