Convertible vs. Coupe hitch, why is it different?

I'm in the market for a hitch receiver for my 90 325i coupe, the one I like seems to only be available for the verts, and early diving board cars.

I want the receiver style class one, so I can remove the ball mount when not in use. This one bolts onto the bumper and spare tire well.
I'm curious if I could make it work with the later bumpers. They are still aluminum underneath, right?

Anyone have another source for a receiver style hitch, designed for a 90 coupe?
    Thanks

edit: The thread title is a bit off (couldnt change), I know why its different.

I've got one for a late model, may be pending sale though. They do exist - I can snap some pics.
