    Weekend Project: 318i-318is

so nothing exciting. i needed to pull a blown m42 that grenaded out of my 318is, then pull the m42 from my 4door 318i and install back into the 318is... spent about 8 hours total(3 bymyself, 5 with help), all i got done was pulling the motor from the 318is, and then BEGAN to pull the motor from the 318i when me and JustinB decided it was time to puff... probably didnt help that we also took a nice pizza and beer break in the middle also, oh well, to be continued next weekend.
    finally pulling a motor:

    with help from JustinB:

    2x thumbs up? stoned? what?

    nice mess of coolant/dirt/gasoline:

I attemted that same thing but with pulling an m20 and a s50 and putting the m20 where the s50 was. Got the m20 hooked up for the most part but couldnt finish, sleep sounded to nice. looks fun, cool pics.

LOL, hittin the green and trying to pull an engine..probably not the best combination!

im doing the same exact thing right now as well...except when i pull the donor inline-4 it'll get a full rebuild before it goes in!

      goodluck!

        lol..um.
So, we got a little more done last night. Unfortuantely we're retarded and had half of the 4 of us tearing apart the wrecked engine rather than doing something. I guess there wasnt much more than what a couple people could do disconnecting shit, forgetting other stuf when its finally ready to pull (heater hoses, ONE of the wires to the starter, and a real dummy one--the ground strap from the motor mount). Its somehow its still not done, but the "good" engine is at least sitting in the engine bay almost where it will rest.

Pikaturs of the busted one first (Because we hardly took any pics of the real work)--
The head wont come off, crap. Bend it to shit till the guide breaks!

thumbs up from Cary because the entire head is being held on by a twisted chain guide.

Top down view of the mess. We didnt lose any parts.........theyre still all there somewhere!

        Closeups, AWESOME! SWEET!

That valve had to go somewhere.

The only decent picture of the 3 pictures of any real work being done, the other 2 came out blurry. The wrecking crew, with what it looks like only Mikey doing anything at the time..and hes still just playing with the stick. sorry, i had to :D

Smoking pot and working on cars never comes out well. I found that out real quick on my suspension swap. Resulted in new contol arms and tie rods.
            Back to my roots

                Keep that piston! sweet souvenir.

Replacing an M42 in an E30 chassis has to be the easiest engine install job. With 3 or 4 sets of hands, a hoist, and no distractions that's a single Saturday job.

                Good luck finishing up.

this is very true. all in all we have probably only put in about 10hrs of honest work, and the hardest part we have run into is the reinstall of the motor with the tranny still attached...lining up the driveshaft to the tranny, and the motor mounts to the sub-frame at the same time is a fat PITA...

What did that motor in? Im worried that my M42 may go up in smoke some time soon.

PO didnt make the necessary sacrafices to the car gods, and they tore his head off and shit down his neck...

really though, i dont know for sure. timing chain guide rail was cool, headgasket was cool, i bought the car like this. my best guess, too many high r3vs, exhaust valve broke off, rattled around in the cylinder for a lil while, grenaded the whole piston...
