    Sigh...I can't read the Bentley

Google and forum searches haven't been very helpful. I have a problem, a real problem. I can't follow the Bentley manuals...

How can I be the only one? Nothing corresponds correctly. Please help me.

I have the 1300+ plus repair manual, the 500+ service manual, and some other document that only lists torque values which I assume is supposed to correspond to one of the other Bentley manuals.

Here is an example of how I am failing. In the E30 Repair Manual on page 23-7 (PDF Page 376) Under troubleshooting manual transmission it says this:

Gear does not stay in - jumps out (Cool, that's what I am looking for!)
a.) sliding sleeve won, guide rail defective, springs broken (Ok, I'll have to find out exactly where these parts are!)
    a.) Replace damaged parts 23 23... (Ummm, WHAT? 23 23...? Is this a section number, page number, or a part number? Doesn't matter, because there isn't a section 23 23, step 23 23, or a page 23 23, and that's an incomplete part number)

I don't know what I am missing. Somehow the entire internet is able to find torque values in "THE BENTLEY" while I have to look them up in a separate torque book where the numbers don't fully correspond to the repair manual.

In the ToCs before every chapter, what do the numbers represent in the left column?

guide rails are what the transmission brace mounts too. super obvious when you get under there.

replace damaged parts (on mine it states to go to section 4.1 in the same category which is the gear shift parts.

attached a diagram of how to use the table of contents for each chapter. example shown is from the same chapter you're in, chapter 9.

      Thanks for the response.

Weird, your ToC doesn't look like mine at all. I'll post screenshots when I have the chance.

As for the transmission mounts, yeah, I'm familiar, just wanted to post a clear example.

Yes, my Bentley Service Manual looks like this, but I'm trying to use the Bentley Repair Manual. Is this just an outdated document that I shouldn't be referencing? I figured since it is over twice as large, it has more detail.

This image shows the "23 23..." references for troubleshooting in the Repair Manual.

So if anyone is interested, I kind of have the answer to how the workshop manual works. The references, such as "23 23..." should reference a set or troubleshooting categories, not part numbers. Parts for this manual are regrouped under certain numbers for a mechanic to diagnose, troubleshoot, inspect, etc. It's designed from a totally difference perspective. Anyways, I can't find any information pointing out these new numerical categories, sooo, this book is fairly useless.
