    M20 swap won't start

Just dropped in an early model m20b25 into my 89 325i while I rebuild the old one.

So I've got everything hooked up, all the sensors and wires, cooling system, etc..

After I hooked up the battery I turned the key on and saw that all the lights inside and out worked, but the car wouldn't turn over. I figured the battery may have been low so I tried jumping it for a little, but and nothing happened.

I did take out a spliced aftermarket alarm system before dropping in the motor as well.. could that have anything to do with it? Anyways, any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Auto or manual tranny? Are you using the 89 325i harness?

The 89 325i wasnt originally automatic(neutral safety switch)? If not disregard.
You need a multimeter if you dont have one already. Go to page 31

make sure the engine is grounded, Check to see if you have 12v at the fat wire on the starter, while trying to crank see if you have 12v at the small wire on the starter black/yellow.

So the battery is at 12V, but I didn't get any voltage on the starter wires with the key off or on. When I went to check the bottom small wire, it sparked and turned the starter for a split second...

Also the IAC is making a buzzing sound when it is plugged in and the keys are on.

things shouldnt be sparking on the starter. make sure everything is tight.

Just took the wires off, cleaned the contact points, tighten them down, reconnected the battery and still got nothin. Where is the neutral safety switch?

If you don't have 12v at the starter I would check fuses to verify that isn't your hold up.

It could be a lot of things. There are numerous switches in the ignition system. You battery seems charged. Is it grounded properly? Ignition switch? Neutral/Park/clutch switches starter solenoid, relay, or starter.

Seeing as you got power through to the starter it's hard to tell. Something isn't letting the power through all the time. Be it a loose wire, bad ground, of a switch/relay on the way out since your starter isn't getting power all of the time when you crank it. I'm no expert through. Just bouncing ideas at you.

So I still can't seem to find out what it is. Battery voltage is good, fuses are good, but there is still no voltage at the starter during cranking. I took out an aftermarket security system before dropping the motor in so im thinking that has something to do with it. I'll probably just take it to a shop here called Oceanside Motorsports.
