So I'm pretty sure my fuel pump went out. I was going to upgrade it to the walbro it's cheaper than the 300 dollar oem one. My problem is the 87 unit is different than the newer e30s. Is there a write up on how to fit the walbro to the 87? Thanks guys. I've researched and researched. But it just seems to be the newer e30s

I'll preface this by saying I haven't done it myself, but I'm pretty sure you just remove the transfer pump and replace the high-pressure pump with the walbro.Interested in vintage cars? Ever thought about racing one? Info, photos, videos, and more can be found at www.michaelsvintageracing.com!

On the pre 87 the negative pump terminal is just grounded to the metal return tube. You should be able to do the same thing on the Walbro. You may have to shorten the return tube slightly as it looks like it feeds into the pickup strainer which may be part of the pump itself (hard to tell from the pics). You'll need a new sock-type strainer for the Walbro.

I'm not sure if it will be the same in the 87, but the Walbro I put in my 89 required some modifications that in hindsight I would not do again. Whether it was my fault, a poor DIY or some combination of both, the (much smaller) sock ended up higher than the OEM one which resulted in fuel starvation issues beginning at about half a tank.
I bought the OEM VDO pump from BMA for less than $200 and it's been great since.

Ok update. You can make the early model a single in tank pump but the modifications doesn't seem to be worth it. If it's a project car then sure try it. The early model in-tank transfer pump has a sending and return line. The late model only has a return line. Also the in tank for the early model is a bit different. So I'm still stuck trying to get my m50 back on the road
