Gas filler won't let pump stay pumping

Basically, even when nearly empty, it will pump for a few seconds then click like it's full. It then does this repeatedly for nearly the entire fill up. This happened several times over the most recent tanks of fuel I've gotten.

I never really looked at gas filler mechanism in detail to see what could be going wrong here, but before I go digging into this, is this a a common E30 fault? Is there a gasket or something that's going bad and blocking the vacuum tube in the fuel pump nozzle?

Car is a 91 318is if it makes any difference. Thanks!

Sounds like something is clogged in the vent/breather system for the fuel tank, although I've known pumps at certain gas stations to be more sensitive than others.

The tank vent comes up the firewall on the driver's side near the brake booster. A rubber line goes from there to the evap canister. I'd check that circuit, as well as follow the hard line back and see if it's been crushed or something along the way.

not to thread jack but my hard line from the canister to the tank is crushed. can i just cut in a piece of rubber fuel line to patch? that line isn't under the same psi as the fuel line correct?
