Stop paying your mechanic to adjust your valves - it's really not that difficult. We'll show you how to on the 3-Series E30 six-cylinder engines.

my uncle said a couple months but i'd suggest you just do it asap.. cuz if you look on that link, there was a couple photos talking about how the valves actually broke off and destroyed the whole thing.. looked scary

Once you start to notice that they're getting louder than usual, it's time to adjust them. It's really not hard, and it's best to do it with 2 people. Takes about an hour at the most, and it makes a big difference.

can someone verify , " The Bentley Manual lists the correct valve clearance at 0.30mm (0.012in) with the engine hot, or 0.25mm (0.010in) with the engine cold. In this case, the engine is cold, so I adjust using a 0.25mm feeler gauge. " please ?

You are correct. And for a cold setting, let the car sit overnight.

That's not entirely true. The clearances can actually get tighter as your engine gets more worn, in which case they wouldn't be getting louder, but they would need to be adjusted.

Yeah, you're right. I guess after a while, you kind of just know when they need it.
