Drill bits aren't picky. They will drill wood, plastic, metal... even flesh if made available.

Have u guys thought about spraying ur air box silver, cause black attracts heat, and silver deflects it, I have just done this, and it also doesn't look too bad

"But why pay $175 when you can get the holes for free?"
Porsche 964 Carrera Cup High Performance Airbox. High performance Porsche 964 Carrera CUP style cover lid works with factory 964 OEM airbox to increase cold air flow and improve power
so what's the deal with the 993 factory motorsound airbox. it looks the same as a regular airbox, but with about 40 holes drilled in it! I see that FabSpeed is selling a hot rod air box cover that is mostly just a factory piece with 90% of the center cut out.
For a whopping $35 I found a stock 993 airbox lid on eBay. I spent $4 on the 1.5" cut-out drill bit and went to town. Sat. I cleaned and re-oiled the K&N filter, installed drilled lid and went for a test drive. It's quite nice. Below 4k it sounds the same. Between 4k-5k it gets a little louder and after 5k it roars like a lion. Not sure how this will be for long trips, but on the short blasts, it's a lot of fun - and it was cheap too!
I tried a cone filter with an integral bell mouthed inlet feeding the 3.5" stock MAF and lost 5hp. put the stock air box back on and gained it right back. Porsche really did their homework. However, when the air box is vented, the gains are in the 5-7hp range consistantly

Thanks Rob for the tip off to Porsche airboxes. Good info abounds from that sector. And Yes, I am an addict!
I drilled 10 one inch holes in the side of the airbox facing away from the engine. It sounds pretty damn good. Depending on the gear I'm in, between 3k and 5k RPM's the thing roars. I'm pretty confident in saying that mid-range power was boosted a little bit, and throttle response is a tad quicker. Good, cheap, and easy mod.
