    A/c

alright, the a/c in my 86 325 doesnt work. it needs a recharge, and i know i have to convert to the new stuff the A/Cs are using nowadays but my dad some how had a can of the old stuff, and he tried to recharge it, he said it wouldnt recharge or something. not quite sure, my chinese isnt that great and his english is non-existent.

my knowledge is A/C systems is pretty much non-existent (i still dont know how it gets the air cold ) so is my a/c compressor defectiuve, will i need a new one? if i do it wont be a big deal because my friend has one i can have. and what does the a/c conversion kit consist of?

Connectors for the r134a and o rings mainly, there's also a different kind of oil it requires. But in your case I'd look for a Freeze12 kit. It's totally compatible with r12 and you don't have to go through all the conversion nonsense. You can find them on ebay if nowhere else. I imagine you can get it through your local parts house though.

Apart from the fact that very few AC shops will then touch your system if you have something other than R12 or R134a in there.

That's probably true, but for those of use who do our own work, it's kind of a blessing not to have to get someone to charge (and charge an arm and a leg) r12 for us.

Different formula. r134a isn't supposed to be harmful to the atmosphere like r12. I think r134 is a bit lighter as well..............

Could be the low pressure switch...........

Is the compressor turning when you have the A/C switched on? You can look at the hub to see if it's spinning. If it's not spinning, then you have a pressure switch or electrical problem.

How do you know your system is full? The low pressure switch will keep the compressor from engaging below about 24psi.

For background: r134a will destroy the seals of most BMW compressors installed before 1990. Freeze-12 is 80% r134a, and it will do the same thing.

Your least expensive choice with a low-but-sealed r12 system is buying more r12. Your least expensive choice with an empty system is replacing the compressor seals ($5, if you can convince a wholesaler to sell to you), receiver/drier ($15-$30), evacuating the system and converting to r134a with a $30 kit. If you want better cooling, replace the expansion valve ($20). Replace the o-rings with HNBR as you get a chance.

r134a has between 0.1 to 0.3 the ozone depletion potential of r12, so it's not that much better for the environment. But r134a systems tend to be much better sealed, not as old, and better maintained.

If you convert, fill to 80% of the r12 capacity by weight:
                    2.15 lbs of R12
                    Nominal R134a fill is 80%-0%+5%, = 27.5-29.25oz.
                    BMW Retrofit capacity label (8-363-254-9) lists 900±25 grams (1.98 ± 0.05 lbs.)
