    Click!

ok, i go to start my car so i can wash it before i go out of town today and all i get is a click. i pop the hood hook up the batt charger and let it sit for about 10 min. go try again click! i try a couple more times and notice light flashing to the left of my motor ie. sparks coming off the starter.

is it fried or could it just be a loose connections, all the connections seem to be on there pretty well, but i havent wrenched at them yet cause i dont wanna get shocked and i dont wanna discon my batt right now.

if it is fried anyone have a good one?

Are you in a rush to get this fixed before you go out of town?!

My guess is about as good as yours about the starter. Did you have water in the engine that may have caused it to short? A bad starter gives some signs that its going bad - do you have to crank the car several times before it starts up? Does it grind?

Sparks coming off could be a bad connection also. I would check all those things out before buying a new one. Good luck!

:stupid: Could be wet wires from the washing, or bad/loose connections. If all you get is a click and no start, pay special attention to the ground on the oil pan.

If it looks like you need a starter lemme know I've got a good one cheap.

Definately sounds like a shitty connection somewhere. Also check your battery terminals and make sure they are tight.

I don't know the specifics of bmw starters, but that sure sounds like a starter solenoid going bad.

I havent had a starter go on an e30, but when it went on my pathfinder twice thats exactly what it did. Check the connections to see if it fixes it, otherwise replace.

I see I mis-read. In that case I'd check my connections, and definately the engine/starter ground that runs from the frame to the oilpan. Easy to check just use one of your jumper cables, and clamp one end onto the drain plug on the oilpan, and the other onto the steering rack somewhere where you'll get good "groundage" and try to turn er over. I think this is a pretty common problem.........

Sounds like what just happened to me. My alternator took a shit, so my car had been running off of the battery for probably a good 3-4 days. When I went to start it, I got nothing but a click because the battery was totally dead.

Do you still have power in the car? Do the windows go up/down really slow? Are the headlights really dim?

i checked all the wires on the starter, first thikng i did was hook the batt up to a charger to make sure i had enough power to start it (in response to eurospeed) last night my dad and i pushed my car over to a hill in my neighborhood and i started it with the tranny and then engaged the starter, and from what i heard i think the solenoid is fine but the motor is dead (it sounded like the gear got kicked out into the flywheel and the motor was spinning)

who can i buy a starter from that can have it hear asap
