The "Everything Mud Flap" and then some thread

I have a 1989 cabriolet. I have the mud flaps for the metal bumpers on the rear but need the convertible mud flaps on the front. (the ones with the cut out notch for the rocker molding)

The other difference in the 2 L brackets is that on the one shown in the pic above, the nut is spot welded to the plate. This makes installation easier but is not essential to design or function. On the R side it's the bolt that is welded to the L bracket. This is a carriage bolt and all hardware is M6x1.0 (more on fasteners later).

Note that the main bracket has a 1 embossed on it and that the nut is recessed so it doesnt turn once you start tightening it. This too is not essential but clearly the engineers wanted assembly to only require a wrench on one side.

The L&R main brackets are mirror images of each other. The right side...

That happens with a lot of part orders. You don't know they are NLA for 3 months. Sometimes though,mthey do show up.

One of the main drivers for me making this thread was the number of people who have asked me about hardware. I got lucky but was intent on making some. This should offer that option to anyone else so inclined.

This is what the rear hardware looks like



Note that the 2 L shaped pieces are different lengths. The shorter one goes on the drivers side since the muffler moves the mounting flange closer to the outside of the car



Here it is attached to the flap. The curved tip is only on the drivers side. You can see in the pic above how it nestles in the the body contour when installed. All of the weight is supported by that one attachment point and it's a bit tight getting a wrench on the back side depending on how close your muffler is.

I was born in Ny and spent much of my adult life in Canada. Nothing like a 2wd pickup w a half dozen Douglas fir rounds in the back to give it weight...

...but then we digress. This is about mudflaps, not cheese...or who has the biggest snow balls :)

Like any good e30 addict (or whore if you prefer) I keep an eye on CL wherever I go and as luck would have it, I saw an ad for a set of used mudflaps WITH hardware, which is of course all I cared about...unicorn hardware !!

The guy was about an hour away and since I was traveling on business I really didn't have any free time. I left it in the air with the guy when he emails me that his friend is meeting him than heading back up my way and could drop the flaps off. SOLD !!

Now I have more flaps then axles and enough hardware to go around. Brass ring indeed.
They weren't new but were quite decent and the hardware was only missing a couple of nuts and bolts which I got from Ace (more on hardware later).

Time for some mud flap love.

As luck would have it, I came across a full set of NIB flaps for sale in of all places....here...in R3V. I hear you saying "oh lord why not me ?"... But you should be saying ohlaud.

The fronts are for an early hardtop and the rears are early anything so they are for the cabrio. this was right around the time Alice came along so the new fronts were hers only now she's in the same position as the cabrio was before...fronts and rears w no hardware.

It's known lore that you cannot buy hardware let alone flaps, but having built wooden boats, made contoured steel fuel tanks to fit in them and having my first engine swap being a Porsche 1500N in to a 23 window VW Van Dlx (another unicorn story) I decided to just fabricate hardware.

The bitch was that I sold off the ill fitting rears and since it never occurred to me when I had them that the hardware mattered, I really had no idea what it all looked like ,let alone now to install it.

Fortunately, I stumbled on factory installation instructions so at least had diagrams as well as priceless instructions...in German. The good news was that they came with a cabrio supplement in English.

I did scan these and if anyone can tell me how to post a tiff or PDF I'll be glad to do so.
