    RPMs at 70mph...

for an '84 318i 5-speed manual? Normally, these cars have a 3.61, correct? It seemed like my revs. were a bit too high for the speed I was traveling. It could just be because I have been so used to driving the eta.

    My '84 318 cruises at 2900 rpms at 75 mph. probably 2700 at 70

hmm, that's odd. my car revs around 3250 at 70mph. i suppose that could just be because i need a new clutch, or does a slipping clutch make that much of a difference at that high of a speed?

That sounds about right to me.
4 cylinder cars with very little torque usually have shorter gearing to keep the motor in it's power band. This way you can still accelerate in top gear at cruising speed.
You clutch is almost definitely not the problem.

I've driven hondas and talons that are at about 4,000 rpms in top gear at 80mph.
I said f that, ETA POWER....
