There are 2 ways to do it; either drop the steering rack or raise the engine. I chose the 'raise the engine' method since it makes sense to replace the engine mounts at the same time. You also have to disassemble & reassemble the oil pump while in the pan, so the more clearance you have the better.

Disconnect the AFM boot, maybe the fan shroud and fan also. Undo the engine mounts and slowly jack up the engine, either with a flat board under the oil pan or on the AC compressor mount. Watch for anything catching on the way up. Once you can get the engine mounts out, replace with some pieces of 2x4, I stacked 2 pieces for about 3" of clearance and that was plenty.

This job is easy. Give yourself 2 hours. Jack up engine & replace motor mnts w/ blocks cut from a 2x4. Get a 10mm swivel socket for the bolts. Drop the oil pump into the pan and you can get the pan out. btdt more times than I care to mention.

do yuo have to detatch the tranny,or will it raise the given amount, without hanging up on the given amount of space that its in.

No, it's not like you're raising up all the way out of the hood, just an inch or two. When you raise it do it slowly & keep checking all around for anything that might hang up. There is enough flex in the exhaust & driveshaft to let the engine move up the little bit in front.

Less than 2 hours if you have car on lift and air gun but doing in your driveway for the first time it takes little more than that.

You have to get oil pump out which is held on 3 bolts to slide oil pan out, other than that everything is straight forward and btw, becareful with those little 10mm 25 bolts, dont overtight them because they are easy to break.

yeah daN told me how fun of a time he had doing the oil pan gasket. that is what made me want to do the 2.7i, so I could just do the oil pan gasket while the motor is out
