    What is this stuff?

So...the free M52 I just picked up is coated with this brittle gunk. No wonder the camshaft broke. Any idea what it is? The motor's getting torn down, so I'm not to worried about it, just curious.

    Underside of valve cover:

Cam support bearing where camshaft broke: :shock:

This is the top of the camshaft cover. I scrapped a little of the stuff off with a screwdriver tip. It comes of very easy and is brown.

That is someone that did not do 1 oil change for the life of the motor. That is Nasty!

Looks like the head gasket went and coolent leaked into the oil. m50s are so cheap its really not worth messing with that. Just my 02 cents worth.

saw that with a 2002 M3 here in SC. I walked back into the shop to check on my car and a tech was working on a gorgeous Laguna seca blue M3. Looked like this if not worse. Turned out the guy drove it to cali and stayed for SEVERAL months if not years . Didnt get it serviced for 75,000 miles

I'm gonna rip the guts outta this one and inspect them thouroughly. If they're good, I'm gonna build a M50 stroker out of a M50 I already have. :D

Hell ya, it'll be reassuring to know that you have a rebuilt engine to. Have you priced averything to rebuild an m50, is it bad?

Haven't got around to it yet. It shouldn't be too bad though. Since I'm using all BMW OEM parts, the bearings, seals, and bolts are readily available.
