I just bought an '87 325is last weekend, and I'm trying to repair some of the issues with it so I can get it on the road. First and foremost, the driver side door hinge pins are completely missing and the door is held on with a long bolt and a nut through each hinge instead of the proper hardware.
I ordered a new set of hinge pin repair kits for both doors so it's fixed properly, but since I don't have a frame of reference as to how they're normally installed, I need your help.
So through searching, I did find this link which helps somewhat - http://zoso.no-ip.org/318i-door-hinge.html.
My first question which just needs confirming - is the upper hinge pin installed in the door side of the hinge and the lower pin installed in the body side of the hinge? Upper pin bolts in from the bottom and the lower pin bolts in from the top? Do I have that right?
Second question - the bushing or steel fabric looking sleeve that comes in the repair kit. The ones I have almost seem like they're too long to be used, since they come all the way down and cover where the c-clip would go to lock the pin in place. Do I need to shave them down a bit, or am I looking at them incorrectly somehow? Here's a few pics of what I mean:
