    Idling/Revving Issue

    E30 beginner here. 1990 325iS.

    When the car is idling and I lightly tap the gas (and rev to about 1100 RPM or so) the engine putters a bit and sounds like it's going to stall. I stop it from stalling by pushing in the clutch or revving higher, but it has stalled before. Idle is around 8000 RPM and it seems to be more noticeable when the engine is cold.

    How should I begin diagnosing this?

    Smoke test would be my first option.

      That's not gonna end well....

      But seriously, I agree with dnguyen1963 to start with vacuum leaks, idle control valve, throttle position switch....go from there.

      Get the Bentley shop manual - it has good diagnostic steps.

      Also search for JLevie posts on troubleshooting. He has a good list of steps to do in order.

        As for the issue at hand, vacuum leak check is what I would do. Also make sure your ICV is operating properly.

          Ha, my bad. Definitely meant 800.

          I'll start with a hunt for vacuum leaks. I'll dig around the forums and Bentley for info, but if anyone can recommend a particularly good resource or tutorial on how to find the leaks that would be awesome.

            I believe bavauto has a whole thread on it. Try searching bavauto vacuum leaks or just leaks
