    SLOOOOOWWWW Start

dad just picked a 88 325I vert dirt cheap, and dumped a bunch of cash into restoring it. it's got one last problem, slow start, not all the time, but most of it, it'll just crank and crank for about 10 seconds before it starts, we we're thinking it could be the fuel pump, but we are unsure, once it's started it runs like a top.

any ideas, we were thinking it could be the pusher pump the one under the car but we're unsure, so before we spend hours scratching out heads, wondering if anyone else has any idea's

Sounds to me like the fpr, or fuel pump. Sounds like the fuel is draining back toward the tank, and it takes it a bit to pump back up. I'm not the expert, but I believe that 88's had only one internal pump.

I get the same thing some times. Half the time it takes a few seconds to start the others it takes a good 5-10 seconds and I have to give it gas quick. Makes me sound like a ricer reving my engine

do your cars have the cold start injector? its supposta give you an extra rich mixture for starting, does this only happen when the car is cold? because it could very well be the problem then

edit: never mind duh-uh Motronic 1.1 doesnt have a cold start injector

Either that or the check valve in the fuel pump.

fpr is on the fuel rail, if your on the driver side of the car its just to the left of the intake mani, got a vac hose running to the pass side of the intake mani and fuel line that goes out toward you

100 % it is the Fuel pump. Had the same problem in my 88 325e. I would replace it with the fuel filter. While your in there inspect you sending unit as if the fuel pump has issues, the sending unit might as well.

Make sure you put in a new fuel pump gasket as well otherwise you might have a fuel draining problem at the top of your tank (found I had that problem last month :) )

also your model year has a fuel pump in the tank, not under the car. Make sure you are in a very well ventalated area when working on it as you will get dizzy :)

it has both dude, and they've both replaced with known good working units, and that did not help the problem one bit.

HMMMMM, Did you check your distributor cap and rotor for wear? I know that if the unit is old and has carbon tracks it can have a hard start.
