Why can't I fill my coolant system all the way?

I'm trying to fill the coolant system on my '89 325i but nothing is getting into the hose that leads to the water pump or the one that leads to the top of the radiator. I'm concerned that the water pump is running dry and not circulating the coolant. I keep adding coolant to the reservoir but it just ends up going through the overflow and onto the floor so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. What are your tricks for filling it?

Have you opened the bleeder on top of the thermostat housing? If you don't open that while filling you'll only get it about half full before it overflows.

I did open the bleed valve and I did run the engine, I drove the car around the block but it got hot very fast. The problem is that the coolant can't fill the hose that goes over the timing belt cover, there's air trapped in there and I think the pump is air locked because coolant doesn't seem to be circulating. The water pump is pretty new, I know the thermostat works. Don't know what to do, I just want to drive my car!

Maybe you need to pressure bleed?

like said by rob, just unscrew the hose, and pour some coolant in there. its all but too easy!
sometimes the M20s like to be a BE*AAATCH to fill and bleed, but that has worked for me everytime.

The problem was that the air trapped in that hose wasa higher than the bleed screw, it wasn't going to come out throught the bleeder. I solved it by running a small tube through the thermostat housing and up into the hose then carefully sucking the air out through the tube. I know this sounds ridiculous and overly complicated it solved the problem, the temp needle stays dead center when i drive now.

i was going to suggest "hand-pumping" the hose,

before i blead mine, i filled it with the bleeder screw open, and squeezed the big upper hoses until i heard water swishing in them..
then continued to fill and bleed as normal,

very little bleeding, and no problems.. my first time ever even draining the coolant.
