Need Help in New England area

My car is acting up and i need someone who is a BMW techy to help me out. The is killing gas and when i drive it, it chokes and the the rpms go down to 1k. To get it back up i have to clutch it and gas it so i can get it moving again, if not it will just shut down. I need someone to help me out. It idles a little, bounces from 800-1k when cold and when warm it goes from like 500-700 if left alone. Im thinking it could be the fuel pump since the car is smelling like gas and it burns it fast, when i step on the gas it just chokes as if no gas is getting through. What can i do?? I need someones help.If anyone in near Rhode Island knows anything abou this problem maybe we can meet up or something if not i will appreciate your help online. Thanks in advanced.

My money is on a plugged up fuel filter and bad fuel tank top gasket. Does it always smell like gas, or does it smell stronger when you fill up your car?

It just smells like gas, I just took off my afm and for some reason it has oil in it. From the AFM back it has oil.

What kind of air filter are you running in front of the AFM?

Nevermind about the air filter then. I was going to suggest an overly oiled cotton filter might be the source of the oil.

Is the AFM all gummed up with oil? I would start by cleaning your AFM and intake bellows and make sure the AFM is plugged in securely. Might as well rule out the things that won't cost you money first.

That said FredK is probably correct but it is possible that the gas smell and the rough running are not inherently related.

Well Bump again i have a new problem. I need someone in NE to help me out here because im really about to quit on this car. Today im driving down this street with alot of pot holes doing about 15mph, all of a sudden i hear a dragging noise something like when you get a flat. So i look back and see there is nothing around, then the car just dies so im like WTH. I push it off to the side of the road and try to start it again, it just whines and whines. I got it on and i try to take off and it shuts down again, this time is didnt want to turn over anymore it just stays there whining. Can anyone help me out here please!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Another problem also, im leaking oil from the bell housing, very small drops. I NEED HELP!!!

I'm going to offer the suggestion that how you phrase your posts can be directly related to the quantity and quality of the responses you will receive. I believe that most on this forum do want to offer their advice, opinions and suggestions to other E30 owners and do not want to see anyone give up on one of these cars out of frustration or lack of information.

That said your last post reads like your car is on fire and you are looking for a hose :) Take a minute before setting upon the keyboard and organize your thoughts including what information you believe to be relevant to the question or situation.

Here are some questions/points of interest that once clarified may jog someone else's memory thus providing you with valuable advice.

                              1. So you are driving slowly on a rough road. Do you believe this to be relevant in some way to what happens next? In other words, did you hit a big pot hole immediately before you started hearing a noise?

                              2. You describe this noise as similar to the sound you have when you get a flat. Other than the sound was there any other change in vehicle dynamics? Did the engine start running poorly at that point, any strange vibrations from the front/back of car, any transmission noises or behaviors?

                              3. Once you came to a stop did the engine stall right away or did it stay running for any given length of time, or did it stall as you were pulling over?

                              4. What do you mean when you say the engine sat there "whining" was it running and making a funny whining noise, or do you mean the starter was turning the engine over but it did not fire or catch?

                              5. "You got it on" Glad to hear it, was she a looker :) Oh wait, I think you mean you got the engine started. Did you do anything special to make this happen or did you just keep cranking on the ignition until it happened? Did you have to feather the gas pedal or do anything under the hood?

                              6. The engine quit again. You seem to indicate that there was something different about this next time you attempted to re-start the car. That it wouldn't "turn over" but was just "whining". Again, we need to have these terms defined for the sake of clarity. Was the starter turning over the engine or not, and if it was did the engine simply not fire? Or is the whining coming from the starter and the engine (flywheel, crank, cams etc..) really not turning over?

Ok, I'm done. Really I'm not trying to be condescending or a dick, but I think if you clarify some of these points you will get more help and better advise.

                              Good luck.
