Ignition pickup ring gear?

on an 87 325is is the ring gear around the harmonic balancer supposed to have flat spot on it.
Mine has a void where the are no teeth is this right?
It looks like it was machined that way.
Somone told me to ask about it as I am trying to figure out a running issue with my car.

The Bosch motronic uses a "60-2" wheel - 60 evenly spaced teeth with 2 missing. You should 58 theeth and a flat spot the same size as 2 teeth and their adjusent spaces.

Thanks I figured it was all right as I couldnt imagine teeth breaking off that smooth.
