bad icv would hang open and you would fast idle all the time. Or it would never open and you would never fast idle. If Im wrong someone correct me, but this is what I gathered from reading about it.

i dont have a fast idle, the fastest it gets is around 650ish and im not 100% sure but i believe markd programed it for 900ish
edit: i guess it could be a tps right?

I dont know if the tps has anything to do with idle speed. I know it tells your computer when its WOT or when you are just accelerating or idling. Is it running rich? There was this article on how to check to see if your TPS is working and at calibrated. It was written by a Bosch engineer or something like that. The link must be around here somewhere. Sorry for the half informative replies. As I remember sources for info from when I had idle problems with my 325is, Ill let you know.

i think its running rich, it smells like it is, but i had alot of vac leaks before i think ill drive it a couple days and see if it fixes itself

hmmm try testing the coolant temp switch. i think its supposda be open when cold and closed when the engines warmer than like 80F. or maybe im bass ackwards.

this also could be a bad FI coolant temp sensor
if u got a bentley there's a chart you can use to test the resistance value versus temp.
what about the o2 sensor? 89's have the heated one dont they so it would always run shitty not just when warm, am i right?

coolant temp switch is a good idea to check too. Check both of them (they are right next to each other)
