Hi All,
As the title states, I am hearing a super loud screech/squeal coming from my clutch/flywheel setup. It has been occurring since the motor/trans was swapped in. I know the trans is coming out, but I am essentially wondering whether I should be able to solve this with just a fully new clutch kit, or if I'm going to have to bite the bullet on a new flywheel as well. Full description below:
The Setup:
318is S50 swap. ZF transmission. UUC Aluminum flywheel. SPEC stage 3 clutch. Flywheel and all clutch parts were brand new on install (including TOB), have about 1500 miles on them now (noise has been occurring ever since the install).
The Problem:
extremely loud screech from the clutch whenever Im letting it out on takeoff in first gear for about a second (I can draw it out if im revving really high on a takeoff and let the clutch out slowly). It can also happen if I'm not nearly rev matched in other gears, but most frequently every time I'm pulling off of a stop. No "chatter" noise in neutral, with clutch in or out. The noise stops once the clutch grabs and theres no longer movement between the clutch/pressure plate/flywheel. The only way I can get away from a stop sign without this embarrassing noise is if i let out the clutch ridiculously slowly.
Everyone keeps telling me "throw out bearing, duh" but this noise is ridiculous, like way louder than a "chatter" or "whine" and I have never seen anything as loud on youtube, etc. My friend swears he had the exact same issue with a similar setup and replaced the TOB and solved it, but I just don't believe that. As far as I can tell, there are no other typical TOB noises occurring.
Obviously something is getting replaced, Im just wondering whether I will have to drop the extra 500 for a flywheel or whether y'all think I could get away with just a clutch kit, or just a TOB replacement. Just don't want to have to drop the tranny twice, but also don't want to unnecessarily toss 500 bucks.
Any thoughts or insights are greatly appreciated.
