I want to install a cone airfilter on my 325i and a frfiend of mine said doing that could mess up the timing due to the increased airflow. I don't think he is right but just wanted to make sure.

yep, hes wrong.
i got a friend like that. he says he wants to supercharge his car rather than turbo becuase the turbo is more dangerous because its forced induction and a super isnt...
he also says that a cold air intake will add 20hp, and hes not kidding. :roll:98 M3/4/5
