So, that "check" thing that blinks when you first start up the car and turns off when you depress the brake to let you know that your brake lights are functioning has continued to blink while I'm driving, and I noticed this last night during a late drive home on a fairly busy boulevard... I pulled off the road, and since being alone, drove around in front of a closed Subway with my rear facing the windows so I could see in my rear view mirror if my lights were working. I was shocked and angry to see that when I hit the brake pedal, my brakelights didn't light up (duh). But, when I held the brake pedal for about 4 seconds, they finally did come on. Has anybody else had this problem? Since the lights do come on eventually, I don't think it's affected by a bulb or a fuse since it happens all the time. I don't know squat about E30 electronics, so someone please help me out. It's kind of a serious thing ya know.

Sounds to me like your brake light switch needs adjusting or replacement. This adjustment should be done at every brake job, on all 86 and older E30's.
