    strange popping noise

before my wreck i use to get a strange popping/creaking/grinding noise coming from the mid to rear of the car, it only happened at low speeds like around parking lots and such. After the wreck it seems liek when i push my car around it is definately worse, also does it without the tranny in the car. I towed the car back to my place tonight after months at my friends and my friend, who was driving the e30 while i was towing, said he could hear the noise the whole time driving around 30mph. What could be causing it to be making these sounds? tia

RSM's? Diffy bushings? RSF's, TA's...there just aren't that many pieces back there!

luke it doesn't seem like it would be any of those even pushing it back and fourth in the garage with no suspension travel it still creaks and pops. I'ts more like something is grabing but looses it's grip. maybe it could be the lsd? but i dont think it's that

Is it randomly popping when you make turns and such or poping all the time?

does it make a loud whining sound at high speeds too? if so maybe a wheel bearing. or the lsd.

nope it's only a low speed problem, in parking lots usually. Now from what my friend told me it's while it's rolling around 30mph also. nothing high speed. maybe it's the lsd? i need to changed the fluid? but i did that just last year.

I know this may sound stoopid, but check your wheel studs and your half shaft studs. I will tell you why. I forgot to torque all my bolts on the left rear wheel, it used to pop when I would put it in reverse, then it started popping at low speed. I checked them and two were finger tight..... I know I am carless, but thank god I caught it in time!

From what I remember the LS clutch isn't so much a popping noise as a ticking sound. Isolate the problem. Try dropping one or the other halfshaft, then both. If it still makes the noise with the shafts off, it could be in the hubs, if it's in one or the other shaft, it could be the shaft joints, and if it comes from the car no matter which shaft is up...it's the diff. Just a suggestion, dunno if it'll work.
                            Other than that, no idea.
