    Charging a new si board

I recently bought a used si board, the type with the switch to keep the batteries charged, but the switch was left on, do I need to charge the batteries? If so, how do I do it, what would happen if I put it in with dead batteries?

I would think (now I'm not the expert) that it'd act like the batteries were dead, until the system charged it up. Then all you'd have to do is re set your cloc/date and it'd work...........
