      I went from a 173 to a 525 and think it improved.

153 has been know to cause erratic behaviour. Many people have switched over to the 173 ECU and been very very happy.

Just swap out the ecu and you're done

for a performance chip, can i fit a 173 chip into a 153 ecu or would i need a whole new 173 ecu?

You'd need the whole 173 ecu.

I've switched my 153 whole unit for a 173 whole unit for this reason, but the car will not idle, and will die if gas is not applied. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Sounds like you need a new ICV.

I swapped a 173 in place of a 153...idle got better, but it still sounds "cammed"

                        I like it.

I do'nt believe this is the case because the car ran perfectly with the old DME.

Back in the day I had a 153 ECU. I tried swapping for a 173 but the car did not run...well it did, just not very well.

Some claim it is a direct swap, but I have seen others claim that you needed to rework the wiring harness. Hell, I think I even saw an article about reworking the harness for a 153 to 173 swap at one point.

I eventually gave up and kept the 153 until I swapped engines.

                              87 325iC came with # 153.
some what rough idle., bad o2 readings, ecu fault code 1221 (bad o2 sensor)

randomly started to buckle between 3500 to 4500 rpms, it would happen now and then, it progressed to an almost daily issue, eventually it almost left me stranded., limped it home.

I already had a 173 unit at hand, so swapped it out and all is well.
basically the 153 burned away gradually.
