per lumen, HIDs run cooler than standard lamps.
electricity goes in, gets converted into
- visible light
- IR
- (minimal) UV
- heat
HIDs run on less current, but produce waay more visible light... this is largely at the expense of heat and IR.
(I'm not saying like, HIDs aren't hot... the bulbs are have less physical surface area to dissipate the heat etc. --don't light up and like, put them in your mouth lol).
for US ellips, I highly recommend 9012/9011 HIR bulbs. cheaper than HIDs, excellent light output. http://rallylights.com/
eg, double dremel a 9011 bulb and run in the 9006 low beam fixture.
