    173.. serial number?

first the odometer gears, then the exhaust, then the SI board.... now this???

I ordered this mama jamma off bimmerforums, the guy said it was a "173 ecu"

Nope. It's a 380 ECU (look at the last 3 digits of the BOSCH number on the yellow sticker), BUT, it should work where a 173 ECU works. Not sure if aftermarket chips are interchangeable though....

173 ECU's have grey stickers, 153 ECU's have green stickers, FWIW.

the ecu i have now is a 153. I thought getting a 173 would be an upgrade so i ordered a tmc chip for the 173 too.

What should i do in this case? Force the guy to take it back and refund my money/shipping or just resell it?

Do what you think is right.

        I would:

1- notify the seller that the ECU they sold you is NOT a 173, see what they say.

2- ask the people you bought the chip from if it will work in a 380 ECU.

3- this will depend on the answers to #1 and 2- but if the chip will work in the 380 ECU, then you are good to go. If not, then I would tell the seller that it's the wrong ECU and you can't use it and would like a refund.

Anyone know if a Jimc/TMC chip for a 173 would work with a 380 ecu?

Call or email the place you bought it from if you REALLY want to know for sure.

Or, just trust what you hear on the interweb, everything on the interweb is true......

the chip should work in that ecu. Just give it a try; it wont hurt anything.
