    San Diego E30 Members! Help!

    1989 325i 2dr coupe wont start

cps plugs injectors fuelpump etc.. you name it its been tested and good..

i tried doing the stomp test on the car but couldnt get the car to give out any codes.. ive done it PLENTY of times on my old e30 and other e30's but just cant get this car to give me anything..

the past 2 weeks ive been testing everything on my car even took it to a shop and the problem pinpointed turned out to be a bad ecu..

im asking if anyone in san diego would happen to have an extra 173 ECU i could TEST in my car if my car works ill buy it off you.. can anyone out there help me out?

Have you checked for fuel and spark at the motor? Meaning, take off a fuel hose and see if it sprays when you crank, and plug in a spark plug outside the motor, touch it to the valve cover, and visually check for the spark?

but are the injectors firing? you could have fuel in the fuel rail but the injectors arent opening. have a buddy smell the exhaust well you crank it.

smell of fuel from exhaust is strong.. when we pulled the sparkplugs out they smelled like gasoline.. we put new plugs in still no start.. but yes i have spark.. i just replaced the crank position sensor today

          another question for the gurus..

when you turn your key to the ignition ON position..but dont start the car.. can you hear your ecu hum?buzz?sound like it turns on?..

i removed the plastic cover that covers the ecu in the glovebox and listened and i hear it buzzing or humming.. does that mean its still good? would a dead one not make any sound at all?

Thats really odd, for you to have spark and fuel and not able to fire. Check your throttle cable and make sure its not broke. Maybe your crank sensor?

Throttle cable has nothing to do with starting and he said he put a new sensor already.

If you have fuel and spark, you may not be getting them at the proper timing. Could be the ECU. What was the last thing you did to the car before this started?

Did you check your AFM? If it is stuck in the closed position you might not be getting any air in your engine. if you have spark and fuel all you are missing is air.

It always buzzes, nothing to worry about, it is just a cut off at the ECU to prevent the computer from sending the signals for engine start.

ok turns out that my timing my is off.. i went through the procedure to take the timing belt off.. rotated the crank to see if the to marks align where they are supposed to be.. and they DONT LINE UP.. meaning my timing is off? im guessing the belt slipped?..

question is.. how do i correct that? do i take the belt off and turn to align cam and crank pulley to the marks? then replace the belt..

The only way the belt gets off is if it's broken or if the tensioner isn't properly installed. Double check. Realignment is possible by your method, but there's a chance that internal damage is already done.

i have a remote start installed in my car.. and my dad remote started my car while it was in the reverse gear.. im guessing with the ebrake up and the car trying to forcefully start whilst in reverse made the belt slip or something like that.. because right after that incident i got in my car and tried to manually start by hand.. it started but it was really really rough
