    cause of ping

ok give me things that could be causing my ping, i know what pinging is so i dont need a definition, i want to know what could be going wrong besides the possible timing too far advanced.
could it running lean or something like that?
is there anything that could cause it besides the timing?

im really not even sure if it is pinging
has anyone had an alternator go bad and start ticking or anything?
how long could i expect the car to run without the alt belt on, before it overheats and/or dies. on second thought that sounds like a bad idea

alternator? what led you to that conclusion? describe the "pinging" more thoroughly i.e does it do it only under load like at full throttle or does it do it all the time no matter the throttle position, is it only present when the engine is cold, what part of the enginedoes it spund like its coming from(check with the hood open) etc. if its only a light ticking sound are you sure it isnt an injector?

if your alt/ water pump belt snapped you would have a matter of minutes before your coolant temp indicator was in the red.

it sounds like its coming from the front left hence alternator suspiscions,
its not an injector or valves, im not that dumb,
it happens pretty much anytime you go above like1/4 throttle, maybe 1/2 when its cold. i havent been able to get it to do it much when out of gear, ive run octane booster in it with absolutely no change, it gets louder depending on how much gas you give it.
it pisses me straight the hell off.
i asked if it could be caused by running lean b/c i know i have vac leaks somewhere, im working on finding them, and it is possible that my fpr is bad.

This is bad information. Sorry to bust on you Adrian, but the TIMING belt runs the water pump. If it breaks, you are headed for a new head, most likely.

You can run an M20 for years without the main (clutch driven) cooling fan, if your AUX fan works well.

is that true, i havne had a fan on that thing for 3 months now and i run at 1/4 temp.

powersteering belt is off and the noise is still there, same with a/c

not to be an ass, but the alternator and water pump are on the same belt. i just replaced mine a few weeks ago after snapping that belt.

Yup, I stand corrected. I must have been thinking of a "different" M20.

                  Sorry.

I have had an alternator go bad on a few different cars. Usually they overheat and go bad, dont really hear anything. Once I had one get so hot, it melted the plug. Sadly, when I have heard pinging on the left side, it turned out being main bearings. If you have no oil leaks and keep up with maintenance ,this isnt likely, unless you are way up in mileage like I was.

the engine only has 18k miles on it, ive changed oil every 3k since ive had it, it burns a little oil due to the low drag rings but i keep up with it.

ive got another observation that im curious about( probably has nothing to do with this thread, consider this a bump)
i went to add a bit of oil to the car, took off the fill cap and (ive seen this before on my car) looks like a very very light steam coming out of the fill port. is this normal, car was hot btw.
