    Push-button starter

Has anyone ever rigged up a push-button starter in an E30? My plan is to have it where the lighter sits in the front console. It would be wired so that the key would still have to be put in the ignition for it to start. (My brother-in-law, NitroRustlerDriver can wire up ANYTHING). This would be a mod strictly for "just cool to have". My idea was to salvage a setup from either an S2000 or a Z8, but if someone makes a good aftermarket kit, that would of course be easier.

Thoughts or comments on this? Please no flaming or stupid comments, they will be ignored and most likely deleted.

Someone did this to an E34 I believe. Check the roadfly archives.

sounds interesting.... but... seems like it would be difficult to have the stock key setup with a button starter also. wont they have problems with each other?

...if you're still gonna have to put the key in the ignition; the purpose of reaching to push a button rather than turn the key to be cool = ????

If you could rig up a way to disable the wheel lock and have a hidden switch to turn on the ignition before using the button then I can understand.

Z8 button is to big to fit
          S2000 button fits with modification

Still have to insert key and turn it to on position.

Push button start = bleh imho
          Below the radar...

My dad did push button starters in an E23 and an E24. They were located near the ignition though and they were done because the cars had ignition issues..
not just to be cool. Yeah.. I really don't have much more to offer because I have no clue how he did it.

Well, I know for sure that you can do it in an e30.. Heres why I know. One day, get in the car, turn the key, wont turn to the start position no matter what. Key tumbler busted. Had to pop the clutch to get the car home. My dad picked up a pushbutton and wired it in and the car started right up. Ive since gotten a new key tumbler and added yet another key to my vast collection.

The haynes manual I have actually explains jumping procedures like this in it. You have to wire a lead off of the positive block that runs from the battery (on cars with batts in the trunk) all the way up to where the tray is under the hood, up to the switch. Its the box that all the power wires go to. Than you need to run a wire from the power cable on the starter to the switch, and to finish the connection, push the button, as long as the key is in run position, it will start.

All you have to do is put a button in on the "crank" wire under neight the dash so it will bypass turning the key to start it. Then all you do is turn the key to "run" and hit the button. You just want to make sure the button is a push-button that is momentary (meaning it will turn off when released). I will look around Josh and try to find a button.

i have done this in my car, i only need the key to unlock the wheel. I have two switches, one for aux power and one for main power and then the button(radio shack button) to start it.

I just did it as a quick project cause i was hella bored, but i have left it in the car. I have it located down where the front ashtray used to be. Since I've put it in everybody asks me if I have NOS, or as the local cop said: "Do you have nitro boosters in this car?"

I can explain it to you later when I can look at my wiring again.
