It's coming from either the gearbox or the transfercase and I don't have a floor jack or any tools here to see the fluid (or lack of!) inside of the case... the noise goes higher pitched as the speed increases, and it's really noticable outside of the car. Inside of the car, it just sounds like gears moving really fast. Not sure what it is... anyone else have this problem?
This will probably put a hold on your boosting plans. Its sounds to me like your transfer case chain is stretched. They stretch over time and flap against the inside of the case. If this is true though you will only hear the noise when the car is moving. The only solution for this is a rebuild....$$$ Sorry, I really hope this isn't your problem but it sounds pretty bleak. The iX transfer case is something that we really need to take care of. Make sure there is fluid in it at LEAST once a year. Also check the splines on the front driveshaft; make sure they have plenty of grease on them. I recomend inspecting the transfer case any ntime the car is on stands or in the air. Its quick and easy and it could save you a whole lot of trouble.

How old are your shocks? Sounds like they are worn out...

Its probably the ABS relay, they go bad if the car gets jumped alot. Over the span of nearly 20 years I am willing to bet your car has been jumped more than a few times. Good luck!
