    Burning oil

So apparently on my way to lunch today my e30 buddy was following behind me and noticed smoke coming out of my exhaust. he knows his stuff and said it was oil. now he said it was bad. though he said his 85 325e burns oil, but not as bad as mine. he just said to put more oil in it every so often. now how bad is this problem? do i get rid of the car? or simply put more oil in it every month? it only happens under hard acceleration at around 3500 rpm's. how bad is this problem, and are there any remedies?

sounds like the start of bad piston rings or a bad head gasket. Check to see if it blows blue at startup. Also I would check all your spark plug to see which ones are oil fowled. The ones that are are going to be the pistons that have the issues.

I would also do a compression test to make sure it is not a really bad problem.

Mine burns oil too, pretty badly, but it's still driveable.

Luckily I've got an M20 on a stand in my garage just waiting to be rebuilt.

Mine isn't hardly noticeable when on the throttle, but when I let off of the gas at high RPMs, there is a THICK blue cloud behind me. Other cars change lanes, it's hilarious...

        james bond style.

this is called "blow-by" i believe, and my m20 does this also, but only @ WOT around 4K+. oil is making it past your piston rings and being burnt up into the exhaust. happy days, u can still drive your car, just take it easy a lil.

I'm thinking valve guides, since it's only when the throttle is shut at high-rpm.

Either way, burning oil doesn't hurt anything, just be sure to keep the oil full. (I work at Valvoline Instant Oil Change, so this isn't a problem)

I do gotta get crackin' on that rebuild though.

Try using Lucas oil to fix the problem :)

ok thanks guys. when i changed the spark plugs most of them had a little brown oil on them. so i will get a compression test and keep the oil full.

on startup it blows nothing. and you cant smell it. just when i am WOT and let off the accelerator to shift gears or to slow down. then it is just a small cloud of slightly blue colored gas.

Yeah, that is a good sign that your piston rings need to be replaced. You are getting blow by.

how expensive/hard is it to do/change?

and can i just let it go and not worry about it, just add more oil?
