    325e rubber trunk mats

    Hello,

I searched around and I can't find any info. My 85 325e has these 3 large heavy rubber mats under the trunk fabric. Real OEM shows them as part 51471961160. Only the e's got them? What is their purpose? They are quite heavy, so if I ditched them I could save some weight, but at the same time its weight in the right spot for traction, low and behind the rear axle.

Any info on these? Should I keep them?

I believe you are talking about "trunk tar". Many people take it out.

No, definitely not a coating. They are about a half inch thick rubber. Trying to post a picture, let's see if I can do this right.

Ah, ok, weird. What is the point of those?

FYI though, trunk tar is very thick and is in pad form, not a coating. It weighs 50 pounds!

must be for sound deadening, or possibly to provide a perfect 50/50 front/rear weight ratio??

This must be the trunk tar then. I'm guessing it weighs close to 50lbs as well. I think I'll keep it, that plus a T8 battery back there should be a good tractive enhancement.
