    Passing Smog in CA

Well the car that I am trying to pass smog on is a 1991 318is now registered in Washington State and tiring to pass in California to get it registered for California.
I have taken my car three times to the smog testing shop and failed all three. I have replaced many hoses that were cracked, oil filter, o2 sensor, running with 91 petrol, had the cat checked; fine, spark plugs, and oil change. But there is a hole in the muffler but was told that was not hurting my test results.

The car passes at 2500RPM but fails as a "Gross Polluter" at idle (btw the idle is turned down all the way). In idle it passes CO levels with a .07 (MAX 1.00; GP 2.50) and for the HC(PPM) levels it fails with 310 (Max 120; Gross Polluter level is 270). I've only got a little more way to go, but I have run out of ideas to what to change.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Have you checked the plugs? You could try running a fuel injection cleaner (BG44K, Schaeffer #131 Neutra Fuel Stabilizer). If the fuel filter hasn't been replaced in the past 15-20K miles then you should put a new one in before you run the cleaner.

Does your car misfire at idle at all? It should be dead smoothe. For some reason there is a ton of unburned fuel going down the exhaust at idle.

          Nope. Not at all.

what was your O2 at idle? If its high aswell as your HC, you have a missfire. If just your HC's are high, ur not really in a missfire state, but def. running rich. My car wouldn't pass smog at idle, so we turned the idle up....

Also, are you getting your cat nice and hot before you test? They need to be at about 700 degrees...

O2? Where/How would you check that?
Yes, the CAT is nice and hot before I test becasue I'm always the first person at the smog place.

Well here's a scan of the most recent smog report:

                If this helps....
