New 1985 318i. Need to drive from CA to NY, what do I fix?

I'm destined for a journey, I'm tired of working all day everyday I want to do a road trip for 2k miles. I have recently purchased a 1985 318i 5 speed . It has the m10 motor. It looks to be pristine as all lights and signals work. It has 110k miles , so far it starts up instantly and doesn't over heat but she seems to idle loud then low loud then low. Sounds like the timing is off. Can any of you angels show me a list of maintance parts to buy. I have only changed the oil and filter and windshield wipers. I want to make her reliable to drive 2000 miles! Thank you!

Inspect your fuel/brake lines, suspension bushings/ball joints, center bearing/flex disc, pads/shoes/rotors/drums. Replace your chain tensioner, adjust the valves, inspect/change the plugs/cap/rotor, inspect/change any suspect coolant/vacuum lines.

Preventively change your fuel filter, serpentine belts, brake fluid, trans/diff fluid and coolant if you don't know when they were last done. Replace all soft fuel lines and fuel injector o rings. Address oil leaks if more than totally minor.

Install new tires if yours are more than three years old, and consider that you will likely encounter snow along the way when you pick tires.

Pack a spare voltage regulator for the alternator and maybe a fuel pump.

Generally consider and listen for anything that seems off when you drive locally or consult a specialist if you are uncertain.

Yes sir all understood. As I understand I've been informed to order from FCP and avoid Turner/ECS parts. Also I hear a loud tick or knock . Motor drives fine and all but a loud noise. Probably normal as I'm use to not hearingit but when I press gas it makes me uncomfortable to floor it wide open throttle as to never ever try it. But I do feel like the engine will last me forever if I am very light on the pedal. It is in very clean condition .

you should adjust your valve lash. These motors like heavier oil with zddp--I use 15w40 diesel oil or 15w50 synthetic in mine.

Many will fondly mention the e30s sounding like sewing machines. That's the ideal. I've noticed my M10 has piston slap until it is warm, so that may be another noise you are hearing.

My motor stopped doing the idle at startup when oil was changed and filter. It came out black :( well thing is it runs smoothly never shuts off but I notice after 5 minutes or so driving if you stop still it idles up and down but doesn't turn ofd
