What was this sound??

For the past week my IX has been making a grinding sound in 1st and 2nd gear if I gave it a lot of gas. I thought maybe my rear diff or transfer case was going bad, so I was planning on replacing some fluids.
However I was just driving on the highway at about 70 and heard a very weird popping sound that to me, sounded like it started by the transmission and went to the back of the car all in about a half a second.

I have no idea what the sound was, but the grinding sound is now gone. I will be taking a hard look underneath my car, maybe it was a rock, but the sound was so odd I’m not sure. I will post updates.

Check your exhaust hangers. My sons car had an odd growling sound that could be felt on the driveshaft tunnel behind the center console. Just needed to drop the exhaust pipe a little. It only happened on hard acceleration in 4th or 5th gear, when the engine load was at its worst.
