    hesitation, spitting and sputtering.

well, my 87 325is is hesitating, could be the old gas, could be the ngk plugs but im unsure as i just bought the car 2weeks ago, but when i start it, it idles ok but when i hit the gas it kinda bogs then picks up. but in high r's its fine. now, im going to replace fuel filter, plugs, the cap is near new as is the rotor, and the wires are fine. anything else?, i also have to flush teh radiator as its like slime in there and rust colored. any sugg? anyway, i got a steal on it, so its time to get fixin as its startin to get cold out and i want to drive it through the winter. one other question, how high does your clutch usually grab when its good?, this one grabs about 1 1/2 to 2 inches before all the way out. Edit: also i forgot to add, when i try to check the codes, it does nothing, when i start the car the cel is on and blinking, and when i try to check codes it blinks the same way. no change in the blinks. so i dunno what the hell is goin on, its just blink...blink...blink, no faster or slower.

Sounds like the car was sitting for a bit. would kinda explain the running issues. I would also do the timing belt and waterpump(especially if you have slime in your rad). I have a feeling that if it was sitting for a bit you would also have a lot of sludge in your oilpan. I would open her up and clean her out. If she is hesitating I would look at the fuel pump and AFM.

regarding codes, since the car is an 87 model it does not have onboard code reading. You cannot get any codes from the car, also there is no check engine light.

for the clutch pedal engagement, you can check your fuild levels, or one thing i had a problem with was the pedal box bracket that holds the clucth pedal. It becomes weak and eventually cracks (the metal) along a stamp line and dosen't allow you to push the clutch master all the way. I got a new bracket, and i welded a reinforcement over it just in case it wanted to do it again.

        WRONG!!!

Your '87 325is has Motronic 1.1 (153 ECU). You have a total of 4 codes:
Early systems (Motronic 1.1 only, I think) flash the fault codes automatically. If the check engine light comes on, leave the key in the On position, but dont start the car. The check engine light will begin to flash the code after about 3 seconds. Each flash is separated by about 1 second. There arent many codes on this system
        1 flash......Air flow sensor malfunction.
        2 flashes....Oxygen sensor malfunction.
        3 flashes....Coolant Temp. malfunction.
        4 flashes....Throttle switch malfunction.

lol, i was getting ready to say, how could sombody tell me my car has no cel when it flashes CHECK in my face lol, as far as the sludge thing, im going to do some flushes and then see how she looks, and the oil is clean as a pin, i doubt there'd be sludge there. anyhow if i keep the car i dont plan to keep the engine, so we'll see, im just hoping to get a few things done with it then possibly sell it depending on how it performs when im able o drive it. i was offered 1200$ last week, but with a few things done, the cleaness of it should pull me in 1800$ maybe.

Keep in mind these cars are skyrocketing in value. A nice '87 should get about $3500, if it is decent shape, and up to $6K in really fine condition.

Unless I am buying it, of course.

I believe I have 153 ECU but you know it has been a long time since I have been under my glove box. I will have a gander.
