funny sound only in 1st gear

my tranny is making a wierd noise, and only when i shift into first. It dosent matter if i clutch in or not, its there, and gets louder as i move faster. Its sort of like a grinding noise combined with a straight-cut gear noise. Its not hard to shift at all, it feels fine. When i shift into second, the sound goes away and every sounds right.

friend said it was a t/o bearing? please advise.

TO Bearing would only make noise when you're on the clutch pedal. Does it do it when you're stopped too? Or only when moving in first gear?

sounds like the dowel that engages your gear for first is worn. If a previous owner always grinded first gear it would wear off the teeth on your dowel.

Sounds like you need to get in there before you no longer have a first gear.

well...i clutch in and put it into first and it makes that funny noise, even when im not moving, just sitting, car in 1st and clutch pushed in. ONLY in first though.

what is this dowel thing? is it actually inside the transmission?

yes it is in the tranmission. It is what engages your gear. When you put your can in first gear the dowel attaches itself to your first gear via a set of teeth. If the teeth are worn out from excessing grinding they will not catch as well. This is why I say it is this.

Take a look at this artice.

What does that funny "H" pattern on my car's gear shift have to do with my transmission? How does it make the car change gears? And when I mess up and hear that horrible grinding sound, what is actually grinding?

in the article the dowel is called a collar.

I have the same problem, and now that I've read that article I understand why. I find that it helps if you push the clutch in for a couple seconds before you engage first gear. This gives all the rotating parts in the tranny enough time to slow down so the dowel can engage the gear without much drama.

Does your car ever pop out of first gear??

If that is your issue I would say your first gear syncros is shot. The syncros allows the dowel to catch up to speed with the gear, this is done pretty quickly. Always a good idea though to change gears slower when just every day driving.

i have a problem with 1st and 3rd gear popping out while driving in my other 5 speed, i know the syncros are probably shot on that one too....the clutch pedal bracket (pedal box) was broke so the clutch engaged barely, all the way down in the back...sometimes having to pump it a few times....I have my new tranny going to be in soon. yay.

My Alfa had an unsynchronized reverse gear that would crunch even with the clutch in. The solution: Push the clutch in, shift into 4th since that sychro rarely gets worn, then shift into reverse (or first in your case). That will also stop all of the moving parts without wearing out any of your first gear parts!
