    Engine knock, please help!

Hi, I just bought an '87 325is. First thing I did was a timing belt.

The engine knocks at higher rpm's. It starts knocking at the point when you feel the instinct to shift (I'd tell you at what rpm, but my tach doesn't work).

The noise as far as I could tell, was present before the timing belt change and before the valve adjustment That I just did.

    This is what I know...

    -Head bolts in good shape
-Valves set to .010. I tried it with both tight and loose adjustments
    -Good gas
-I triple checked timing marks before and after belt change.

Now, this is what I was unsure on during the T-belt change. The car originally had both timing marks (Cam and crank) pointed to the marks on the engine. This is the way I reinstalled it. However, there was another set of marks on the small portion of the timing belt cover that I had removed. It looked to be close to the crank engine mark, but about a tooth off.

Should they have been set to that mark, or the mark on the engine itself (Like I have it now). Could that be the cause of my knock?

    Please help!

(The engine has been tuned up, but I have yet to change the fuel filter)
