Awful whine coming from the engine bay.

You can download the video that has the sounds in it here:
    http://www.r3vlimited.com/Media/Videos/Firstdrive.avi (15MB)

or just the audio ripped from the video here:
    http://www.r3vlimited.com/Media/Sounds/Noise.mp3 (1.4MB)

I spent the entire damned day trying to figure out where this noise is coming from.

Currently the following items are off the car, or are not driven so cannot be making the noise:

    Alternator
    Power steering pump
    Water pump
    Engine driven fan
    (A/C is already deleted)

I took the front crank pullys and gear off, and the timing covers. I cannot find anything that is rubbing on the timing belt, so everything looks good there. With the engine running I was unable to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, it seems like it is everywhere.

It is engine speed dependant, as the sound clip should show. However it must be forward of the flywheel as I can have the clutch in and the noise remains unchanged.

The sound is most "potent" as the engine is starting, and getting up to speed. After this it is somewhat masked by the engine itself but is still perfectly annoying.

maybe the starter isn't completely disengaging?

While that is possible, I don't think that is the problem. Given how much I have left it sitting around idling while I tweak things, and how much I have driven it... from what I have heard it should have burned up by now if it was being driven by the flywheel all this time.

It sounds like powersteering, but of course you dont have the pump in. I would go with the start also.

          .

so i assume you took off all the belts and the noise is still there correct?

And the timing belt is not rubbing, a good start.
i cannot see it being a starter, as it would make a lot more noticable noise when it stays enganged and the bearings internally would overheat and jam the starter after a given amount of time as they are not meant to back spin for any lenght of time.

and its not driveline as its engine speed dependant, not driveline.
first of all, itsmost likely not a vacum leak higher pitch squeal? because your engine runs totally smooth.

i'm leaning towards pilot bearing possibly, did you replace it? did you replace the clutch? i can't remeber if you did. does the noise change if your clutch is depress or not? i need a little bit more inof here jordan and i could help you a lot better.

add me on aim if you like.

I just remembered reading about someone that had a similar problem a while back. I did some searching and tracked it down.
"The case of the whistling motor. After we put the head back on and repaired everything else there was a slight whistle. I never could localize it. It sounded like a bearing. Maybe a belt. It didn't do it all the time. Then I found the drops of oil clinging to the bottom of the transmission today. Ah hah! A vacuum leak. Small but definite. I had the car up on the rack and one of BMW Mastercare's technicians, found it. The 325i has 2 cutouts on each end of the head in the upper section where the cam resides. They are plugged with little rubber plugs that have a shape like doghouses. Really. I'll have to take a picture of one and post it. So anyway one of these was leaking. A little bit of oil running down the back of the motor onto the bell housing and a slight occasional whistle from the engine sucking air through the 'doghouses'. They removed the valve cover and pulled the doghouses, cleaned everything up and put the valve cover back on, replacing the valve cover gasket also. No more oil leak, no more whistling."

I have all new dog houses, new pilot bearing, and clutch operation makes no difference in the sound. The clutch and pressure plate were reused, they were both in excellent condition.

The engine does not run very smooth, but every gasket/seal is new, so I highly doubt it is a vacumm leak.

Have you checked the Intermediate shaft? with the block witting the bearings could of gotten a little rusty.

Hmmm,....Is the whine from cold starts too? Or does it only do it when warm?

Damn there goes that idea, Some belts get smaller with heat putting pressure on whatever they are driving? Maybe yours is a lil tight?
