    Ignition timing help 318i (M10)

I jus got my car running it idles ok, but when i rev the engine it will not go past 3000rpm. Any ideas why? I have the timing set correctly to tdc...but is there some process to dial in correctly?

    thanks

Well i seem to be hitting a rev limit...3k rpm. Could this be due to using a 325i TPS? When i rotate the dizzy a few degrees it idles high, and highest i got the revs to go is 4500 rpm. it studderds though.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Yea the timing needed to be retarded a bunch. Now i have another problem (go figure) when i rev, it goes up to 3000rpm then seems to stick and bounce then it goes up normally to 6500. When i drive, it hesitates real badly around 3000rpm and dies. TPS is good i have 3 and it all did the same thing. Im thinkin it maybe a fuel problem as in my pump is not pressurizing the lines enough or FPR. Or could be it that i retarted the timing too much? Any ideas?

The timing is set at the opening on top of the bell housing. The steel ball on the flywheel needs to line up with the mark on the bell housing at something like 5000 RPM's I'm not exactly sure on the RPM's but its up there. once I set my timing properly my M-10 ran great. I'll try and find the correct speed from my Bently and get back to you later

OK here's the scoop there are two diffrent distributors
            0 237 002 080 dist. 15 BTDC @ 2000 +/- 50 RPM
            0 237 002 096 dist. 26 BTDC @ 4000 +/- 50 RPM
It is set with the vacuum line disconected at the distributor
Aim your timing light at the timing hole located on the top of the bellhousing by to the motor. Rev motor to specified RPM then turn dist. until the steel ball or line on the flywheel itself line up to the line on the bellhousing or the center of the timing hole, once its there lock the dist. and your done.
